Franklin Lakes OKs Chabad addition

FRANKLIN LAKES — The Chabad Lubavitch of Northwest Bergen County will have more permanent sanctuary space, an apartment for its rabbi and a ritual bath, after the borough Zoning Board of Adjustment approved 15,000 square feet of additions earlier this month.

The board on March 2 signed off on exemptions to the borough's regulations for lot area and front-, side-, and rear-yard setbacks. The variances allow the Jewish community center to add 1,500 square feet of office and conference space, 2,600 square feet of activity space, 6,100 square feet of storage and two apartments (totaling 6,100 square feet) for its rabbi and an assistant.

Rabbi Chanoch Kaplan said there was a "need to expand” the community center, which opened in 2000 in a former church dating from the 1950s.

“It was one large room with a couple small rooms front and back and no circulation,” Kaplan said.  “We’re expanding superficially. It’s more of a fleshing out.” continue...
