Status of Mumbai Jewish Center Still Unclear
By Graham Bowley - NY TIMES
8:16:AM Thursday, Nov 27, 2008

This also just in from Heather Timmons in New Delhi:

The Chabad-Lubavitch center, the local outpost of a global group that promotes Judaism, is located in Nariman House, one of the buildings that has been attacked in Mumbai.

The whereabouts of Rabbi Gavriel, who runs the center, and his wife Rivka remain “unknown,” according to the group. P Early local television news reports said that he and his wife were unconscious in the building, but that has not been confirmed by the group or by Indian officials. The Rabbi’s son and his nanny have been evacuated. Vartika Sethi, spokeswoman for the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi, said early Thursday afternoon that the embassy was still “trying to gather information” and did not have a “clear picture” of what is happening.

'Eight Israelis held by terrorists in Mumbai Chabad House'
DAVID HOROVITZ, matthew wagner, and jpost staff , THE JERUSALEM POST
8:59:AM Thursday, Nov 27, 2008

Indian commandos and police were evacuating civilians and cordoning off the area apparently in preparation to storm the Chabad House in Mumbai, India, where a rabbi, his wife and several other Israelis were being held hostage, according to IBN, an Indian news agency.

Chabad spokesman in Israel, Moni Ender, said there were eight Israelis inside the house, including Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka Holtzberg.

Several other Israelis were reportedly being held at the Oberoi Hotel, Israel Radio reported.

Newscasters were calling it the "final assault" on the Nariman House, where Chabad headquarters are located, adjacent to the Leopold Cafe, a major tourist center in Mumbai's Colaba area, which was also attacked Wednesday night. CONTINUE...

'I just grabbed the baby and ran,' says Mumbai Chabad employee
HAARETZ
10:15:AM Thursday, Nov 27, 2008

Twelve hours after gunmen stormed the Chabad headquarters in Mumbai as part of a widespread attack throughout the city, Sandra Samuel heard the cries of a small child outside the room in which she had barricaded herself.

She opened the door, grabbed a 2-year-old old boy and ran outside with another center worker. They are the only ones to have emerged from the house.

"I took the child, I just grabbed the baby and ran out, said Samuel, 44, who has worked as a cook for the center for the last five years.

The boy, whom she identified as Moshe Holtzberg, the son of Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg, was unharmed - but his blood-soaked pants spoke of the horrors inside. Holzberg is the main representative at Chabad house.

Samuel, who was looking after the boy at a nearby police station, said that as she ran out, she saw four people lying on the floor, apparently unconscious.

Chabad spokesman Moni Ender in Israel said there were eight Israelis inside the house, including Rabbi Holtzberg and his wife. continue...

Tense standoff at Nariman House
2:52:PM Thursday, Nov 27, 2008

They came by sea, on a small skiff, and made their way in the dark through the narrow streets of old Colaba to the six-storey apartment building called Nariman House. There they stayed – an unknown number of mystery gunmen who besieged the building from the inside.

They had taken over the home of members of a small sect of orthodox Jews called the Chabad movement. Just how many gunmen were holed up there is not known, as is the number of dead, the number of escaped and the condition of the hostages, if there were any.

Into this scene entered the black-clad commandos – members of the government's elite national security guard, specialists tasked with securing the safety of the prime minister and other dignitaries. continue...

Eight people seen outside the besieged Chabad House in Mumbai Thursday night were local Indians from a home in the same compound, and not Jewish or Israeli hostages from the Chabad House, Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Thursday night, refuting media reports that the Chabad House hostages had been freed.

The commando raid was continuing outside the Chabad House with the remaining members of the five families taken hostage still being held.

Israel Radio reported that Indian forces were searching for other gunmen inside the building but that not a single a shot has been fired in the last hours of the building's takeover by Indian security forces.

AT THE END OF AN ALLEY IN MUMBAI
By Rabbi Shimon Posner - EXCLUSIVE to SHMAIS.com
7:19:PM Thursday, Nov 27, 2008

Like me, you and your family have been glued to streaming internet since news broke out from India. I never knew that Bombay had changed names to Mumbai. I didn't know that 'the Taj' was a swanky hotel and that it competed with the Trident (not the Tic-Tac). I didn't know that south Mumbai was the ritzy side of town, a thin peninsula stretching south. I didn't know Colaba was the penultimate section or that the Chabad House, known as Nariman House, was at the end of an alley.

We are in the Age of Information, so the information streamed into my conscience very quickly and mounted all night long. So did the misinformation. Hearing good news and then hearing it cancelled is crushing.

So we daven so we add mitzvahs and we get everyone involved as we can. And we realize, we realize that this nondescript five- storey apartment at the end of an alley in Mumbai was chosen because it is a place where Israelis and Jews gather. For no other reason. They are out to get a bunch of back-packing college-age kids and a rabbi and his wife. And his little son.

And you see videos from two years ago of the rabbi and his wife -- two little doves -- that left their families and friends to make challah and kosher chicken on the southern end of the Colaba peninsula of Mumbai India because there, there is a secret passage which leads into a Jewish heart . Because the way to a man's heart – and the way to a college –age women's heart, it seems – is through their stomach. So Gabi and Rivkie have to go to India to find that secret passage.

And you watch the videos of them and their cook (the one who rescued their baby) how she loves working for the Holtzberg family and their little enterprise because 'there's action there'. And on the road of this little passage you come across another passage, this one not to the Jewish heart but to the Jewish mind – and ultimately to the Jewish gut.

Just yesterday I was standing outside the Pavilion's supermarket here in our glorious Rancho Mirage talking with a friend who is smart as they come. As people walked by, my friend muttered to me. "They're trying to act like they are not looking at you; they are trying to act like they aren't asking who is that strange looking man with a yarmulke and beard? You don't notice it because you grew up with it. But I see it. ... . "

We are, my friends, marked men. And women. And taking off a yarmulke and shaitel might not unmark you. And now it seems that people who stop over to our house for dinner are marked too, even if their markings were not so easily recognizable before they broke bread with us. No one ever promised you that it is safe to be a Jew. Ever.

Little Moshe Holtzberg was rescued by the Chabad House cook/maid/assistant. We pray he will have no emotional scars. That this encounter will end with rejoicing soon, and boy! will they have a tale to tell.

But we, safe, here; ensconced in our fantasy- induced safety have a tale to tell, too.

It is not enough to be marked as a Jew. You have to enjoy being marked as a Jew. You have to choose it... you have to love it so much that Ashreinu mah tov chelkaynu! How lucky we are to be Jews. How lucky to be chosen to be marked...because while this mark may elicit terrible responses, this mark is a kiss from the A-lmighty.

This mark is a legacy from the love of Abraham, from the tears of Isaac's sacrifice, from the agony of Jacob, from their triumph too. And this legacy we must preserve at all cost because from this humanity gets sustenance.

This mark elicits such baseless hatred because it was born in a bottomless love. But dare we allow Jewish children to grow up and the most emotionally charged moment of their Jewish lives is when they are marked by terrorists?? Dare we let them live out their lives without ever knowing how fortunate that mark. How the king Himself marked us and promised He will never leave us? Dare we allow terrorists to dictate the worth of our heritage??

I apologize. Such emotions are not dignified for polite company. But these are not polite times.

This then is the ultimate Never again. Never again shall a Jewish child not know Ashreinu!! Fortunate are we and happy our lot. This is secret passage which begins at the end of a narrow alley off Fourth Pasta and the Colaba Causeway in Mumbai.

We found the secret passage, and we have a Jew -- who rarely left his Brooklyn office for nearly five decades – to thank.

Now back to saying Tehillim.

NY TIMES: Brooklyn Rabbi and His Wife Caught in Mumbai Attacks
By FERNANDA SANTOS
7:41:PM Thursday, Nov 27, 2008

In 2003, barely out of their teens and newly married, Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, moved from Brooklyn to the coastal city of Mumbai, India, to manage a mix of educational center, synagogue and social hall known as a Chabad house, one of about 3,500 outposts around the world run by the Lubavitch Hasidic movement.

The place soon became a year-round magnet for Israeli backpackers and the Jewish businessmen and tourists who flock to Mumbai, as well as for the Iraqi and Indian Jews who live there. Mrs. Holtzberg served visitors coffee and homemade kosher delicacies. Rabbi Holtzberg always offered a helping hand to someone who was sick or stranded, often calling worried parents or spouses miles and miles away to calm them.

On Wednesday, the Holtzbergs’ Chabad house became an unlikely target of the terrorist gunmen who unleashed a series of bloody coordinated attacks at locations in and around Mumbai’s commercial center. They stormed the city’s largest train station, a movie theater and hospital, a popular restaurant and two luxury hotels, including the iconic Taj Mahal, on the Arabian Sea.

Firing grenades and automatic weapons, the men also took the Holtzbergs and at least six other people hostage in the Chabad house, according to friends of the Holtzbergs. The couple’s 2-year-old son, Moshe, and a cook managed to escape about 12 hours into the siege, the friends said. The boy’s pants were soaked in blood when he walked out of the house. By late Thursday afternoon in New York, there was still no news of his parents’ fate. continue...

Statement from Lubavitch World Headquarters
8:12:PM Thursday, Nov 27, 2008

STATEMENT BY RABBI YEHUDA KRINSKY ON THE SITUATION IN MUMBAI , INDIA

(LNS, NY) Once again, terrorism has reared its evil head, this time in Mumbai ( Bombay ) India . Our Chabad-Lubavitch Jewish Community Center, located in Nariman House in the Colaba district, is still occupied by the terrorists.

As of Thursday (Nov. 27) evening, we have not yet heard from our representatives in Mumbai, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg, who head the center. The Holtzberg’s 18-month old son, Moshe, was rescued early Thursday morning and is in the custody of trusted friends.

Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters, through its global contacts, continues to vigilantly monitor this tragic situation as it develops.

We pray for the speedy, safe release of all the hostages and those yet missing, and for the healing and complete recovery of all those wounded. We express heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of each of those who have been brutally murdered in this senseless barbaric attack.

AP 8:09pm: At least three blasts during the early morning hours @ Chabad House
8:17:PM Thursday, Nov 27, 2008

MUMBAI, India (AP) — Indian commandoes scoured two luxury hotels room-by-room for survivors and holed-up militants Friday and were in a tense standoff at a Jewish center, more than a day after a chain of attacks across Mumbai by suspected Muslim militants left at least 119 people dead.

...At the besieged headquarters of the ultra-orthodox Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch, there were at least three blasts during the early morning hours. Militants were believed to be holed up inside the building — possibly with hostages — but the situation remained murky Friday.

Indian commandoes took positions outside, but did not appear to enter the site.

Mumbai attack sends shock waves through Chabad community worldwide
By Yair Ettinger, Haaretz Correspondent
8:28:PM Thursday, Nov 27, 2008

The terror attack on the Chabad center in Mumbai on Wednesday was the worst attack in the movement's history, sending shock waves through its worldwide delegates network. Chabad emissaries, spread in almost every corner of the globe to help Israelis and Jews, have themselves become terror targets.

"It's still early to say what this will do to us. At the moment we're all very worried and occupied with what's happening in Mumbai," Rabbi Yosef Kantor, Chabad's executive director in Thailand who is also in charge of the center in Mumbai, told Haaretz.

Earlier this week the network held its annual conference in New York, which was attended by some 4,000 delegates from all over the world.

"It was a huge display of power of a project that grows bigger every year. You see young families who set out with great enthusiasm to work in the most remote places on earth," said Chabad spokesman Rabbi Menachem Brod, who returned from New York. CONTINUE...

On the 28th of Nissan, 5750 (April 23, 1990) the Rebbe was notified that P.L.O. terrorists were threatening to attack various targets throughout the world. The following is the Rebbe's response, freely translated:

"I was notified that the P.L.O. has given instructions to all its branches worldwide to strike at targets throughout the world, G-d forbid.

"It is therefore necessary to invoke and emphasize the blessings from G-d to all Jews in all places, in all their needs. Primarily the most needed blessing is the miracle of the complete and perfect Redemption through Moshiach (whom we await every day that his coming not be delayed even as much as the blink of an eye). These blessings should be emphasized with complete trust and confidence, as well as with joy and gladness of heart.

"We should especially fulfill the directive of the Chabad Rebbes, 'Think good and it will be good.'

"This means that thinking positively causes the course of events to actually turn out good.

"This information should be utilized not to scare anyone, G-d forbid, but rather in the positive sense, to enhance the service of the Jewish people in the study of Torah and the observance of mitzvot.

"On the verse (Gen. 27:22), 'The voice is the voice of Jacob,' our Sages tell us that the power of the Jewish people is with 'our mouth.' Through our heartfelt prayers and Torah learning we can eliminate the plans of 'the hands of Esau,' the terrible schemes of our enemies.

"Thus there should be additional activities in Torah study and prayer and in mitzvot in general.

"Special emphasis should be placed on studying Torah diligently. For our Sages explain the verse, 'If you will follow my statutes' to mean that if you will labor in Torah... 'I will grant peace in the land. You will sleep without fear.'

"Through Torah study we eliminate all negative things and they are even transformed to good.

"Also, additional prayers should be said. Keeping with the spirit of 'thinking positive' it would be advisable to recite daily an extra three chapters of Psalms. One of these three chapters should be the final chapter of Psalms (ch. 150) which concludes with the verse, 'Let every being that has a soul praise G-d.' This means that every man, woman and child praises and gives thanks to G-d for His benevolence, and for the blessings and good fortune that He bestows upon us and will continue to bestow upon us.

"It would also be appropriate to add in the giving of charity.

"Although 'fasting' is out of place (especially in the context of 'thinking positive') this does not contradict the giving of charity to redeem a fast.

"It would be appropriate to give charity in the amount of two meals, and even better in the amount of three meals. This charity should preferably go to support people who learn Torah or institutions involved in disseminating Torah.

"Certainly these directives will be publicized in all Jewish communities, to all Jews, men, women and children.

"Emphasis must be placed however, to be very cautious not to scare anyone, G-d forbid. Rather, the purpose is to inspire everyone to enhance his/her Torah study and mitzvah observance, with true bitachon, complete trust and confidence in G-d, with joy and a glad heart.

"The main thing is that the resolutions regarding the above should hasten and quicken the concept of 'think good and it will be good' in actuality starting from the ultimate good -- the complete and perfect Redemption through Moshiach."
