Over the past four years, Rabbi Shimon Eisenbach, Chief Rabbi and shliach of the Shachmon neighborhood in Eilat, has been trying to persuade Avraham Abergel, owner of the local mini-market, to close his store on Shabbos and Yom Tov.
The store is often at the center of Shabbos violations throughout the day and is also useful for anyone looking for a store that is still open at night.
As time has gone by, Mr. Abergel has become more receptive to what Rabbi Eisenbach has to say. This was first seen two years ago, when Rabbi Eisenbach persuaded Mr. Abergel to sell his chometz and remove all chometz products from his shelves before Pesach.
Now, Mr. Abergel has finally agreed to close his store over Shabbos. In honor of the closure, he has installed a front door. Until now, there was never a front door because the store stays open 24 hours a day. On Yom Kippur, a guard was usually posted in front of the closed shop.
The new front door and bars will be closed every Shabbos and over Yom Tov. This Friday, signs were put up informing customers when the store would be closed and in the shop everyone drank a lechaim in honor of the new hours.
