A story of the Rebbe #186 - How to Dispel Sadness Print Email

A Tomim once complained to the Rebbe in yechidus about having intrusive thoughts during davening. The Rebbe replied, "One suggestion is to daven from the Siddur, and if you want to daven with your eyes closed you should make sure that the page in the Siddur is open at the right place. If you find an intrusive thought in your head, you should open your eyes and look at the words on the page to banish these thoughts."

The Tomim also mentioned that he sometimes experienced feelings of sadness. The Rebbe answered, "It is written, ???The commands of Hashem are just, rejoicing the heart.' If you increase in diligent Torah study, the sadness will be replaced with joy."

He added, "I spoke to the mashpia, and in accordance with his instructions I would like to ask for a tikkun. Bli neder, from now on I will no longer drink any more than a revi'is."

The Rebbe answered, "Learn three or four maamarim by heart, or at least their content, and then you will have resolved the matter."
